Biodiversity Monitoring in Agricultural Systems – Conceptual Framework and Literature Review

This report presents a summary of the conceptual framework for monitoring Israel’s agricultural systems, that was developed on the basis of meetings and consultations with experts in the field, as well as a literature review of global experience on this topic. This handbook forms the basis of a program for monitoring biodiversity in agricultural systems, approved following submission to the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Agriculture. Within this framework we set out on a joint initiative between the Ministry of Agriculture and HaMaarag.

The Agriculture Monitoring Program is part of the National Ecosystem Assessment Program [in Hebrew].

The influence of settlements on the diurnal activity patterns of mammals in Israel

An increase in the human population density in Israel has caused both the expansion and the intensification of the impact of human activities on wild animals. In areas where animals exist in close proximity to humans, some species change their spatial and temporal activity patterns to reduce their chances of encountering humans. Changes in the temporal activity of a species may affect diverse aspects of the species behavior and its physiology. Behavioral patterns are expected to respond to changes in environmental conditions before changes in the size of the population occur, and monitoring these will allow early human influences on wildlife to be identified. Understanding the effect of human settlements on the diurnal activities of mammals is important as a knowledge-base for management decision-marking, with the aim of preserving species and the ecosystems they inhabit. The research goal is to quantify the influence of human settlements on the temporal activity patterns of medium and large mammals.

The article, written by Dr. Naama Berg, Orit Ginzburg and Prof. Avi Perevolotsky, was published in August 2012 in the Hebrew-language Journal “Ecology and Environment” of the Israel Society of Ecology and Environmental Sciences. The article includes a background survey emphasizing the necessity for monitoring to optimize management of natural resources, and a description of the monitoring program which commenced in April 2012: how the program was developed and the expected use of the program's findings [in Hebrew].
